SARASOTA
HERALD TRIBUNE
What every woman
wants and more
By Billy Cox
Trying to figure out what women
want is one of the longest-running
entertainment propositions
in America.
You can certainly trace it
farther back than the "What
Women Want" Mel Gibson
comedy in 2000, that's for
sure.
You would have to dig through
archival sediment at least
as deep as 1919 for clues in
the silent-movie drama "What
Every Woman Wants." By
contrast, that artifact makes
the 1954 comedy "What
Every Woman Wants" feel
shiny and new.
In the 21st century, as media
options proliferate and compete
for regional micro-markets,
Southwest Floridians will soon
have two shows on the same
cable-access channel to tell
them exactly what women want.
But a glimpse at this imminent
feast of riches offered by
Comcast's BLAB Television Ch.
21 also tells us what women
don't want -- controversy.
Rewind to last year, when
Jill Obrochta was all
by herself with the launch
of "What Every Woman Wants" on
BLAB-TV.
Producing and hosting half-hour
segments of what she calls "infotainment" spots
designed to promote the expertise
of local entrepreneurs (formal
bridal wear, exfoliation scrubs,
perfumes, etc.), Dambro's high-energy
lead-ins spelled it all out:
"It's fun! It's exciting!
It's hip! It's empowering!
It keeps in touch with the
coolest things around Sarasota!"
She touted it as "Sarasota's
first interactive TV show," with
a Web site that invites viewers
to click onto reruns and grab
discounts from show sponsors.
